The annual awards took place last night in downtown Los Angeles. Hosted by Regina Hall, the event included performances by Lizzo, H.E.R., Kirk Franklin, Cardi B, DJ Khaled and Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Mary J. Blige.

The top highlights included a tribute to deceased rapper Nipsey Hussle, the artist, entrepreneur and activist who was deeply involved in his community in Los Angeles and included performances by Marsha Ambrosius, DJ Khaled and John Legend.  Nipsey's mother, father, grandmother, sister, wife Lauren London, and his children, Emani and Kross Asghedom accepted the award.

Philanthropist Tyler Perry was honored with the Icon Award and talked about hiring actors Taraji Henson, Viola Davis and Idris Elba and building his Atlanta based Tyler Perry Studios.

Other highlights from the 19th annual BET Awards included "Little" star Marsai Martin who won the "Young Stars Award," and at 14-years-old, is Hollywood's youngest executive. There was also a stirring speech by Burna Boy's mother and manager, Bose Ogulu, who while accepting the award for Best International Act on her son's behalf, thanked the network and included a message from her son. "The message from Burna would be that every Black person should please remember that you were Africans before you became anything else."
