The scares are scarce in 'Annabelle Comes Home'

Over-reliant on deafening sound effects, this third installment of New Line Cinema’s “Annabelle” doesn’t conjure up the scares this time around.

With a plot completely predictable at every turn, the film follows the toddler-size demonic doll, who after being cleansed of evil spirits has been locked away in a glass case alongside other evil relics in the home of demonologists Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga).
Fast forward to a year later, she is unwittingly let out of her caged domain and returns to wreak more havoc.

It all begins when the Warrens embark on a trip leaving their ten-year-old daughter, Judy (Mckenna Grace) with her babysitter, Mary Ellen, played by Madison Iseman. When Mary Ellen’s nosey best friend, Daniela (Katie Sarife), pays the pair a visit, she lets her overwhelmingly inquisitive nature get the best of her and sneaks into the locked artifacts room where she accidentally awakens the creepy-faced doll Annabelle and her fellow evil-cohorts by touching everything in the room. The plot then follows three young leads as they battle ghostly spirits and demonic powers that include a bride and a ferryman corpse all while attempting to stuff Annabelle back into her caged domain.

Directed by Gary Dauberman, the screenwriter of the “Annabelle” films, there are a few pieces familiar to fans from the previous two “Conjuring” films: the music box, the toy monkey with the accordion and the large Samura.

The film serves up the usual generic scares: self-rocking chairs, self-playing pianos, creaking doors, vacantly-staring figurines and sliding furniture – nothing you haven’t seen or heard a million times before. There are less thrills, chills and frights and nothing new left to see, but just a creepy doll who delivers the basic requisite scares.
