WGN America’s racy slave drama returns for a second season in March. Here is everything we know so far about the popular show's return.

The show’s executive producer John Legend is joining the cast in the role of renowned abolitionist Frederick Douglass and brings to life one of the greatest figures in American history.

“It was not much more than a cameo and my role is very small in the overall arc of the series,” says the Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter, who also pens a theme song for the show called “In America,” which he says was inspired by American history.

Despite the small role, Legend, who was last seen playing a Jazz musician in the award winning musical "La La Land," admits he's enjoying tackling another medium.

"When it comes to TV and film, there are a lot more moving parts. There are writers. There are directors. There are other actors.

And there's less individual control on my part. So it's interesting to kind of submit to that process and allow these great creative people to help shape how I'm seen. And it's a really interesting difference, but it's been fun for me to do."

Expect to see several guest stars that include DeWanda Wise (“Shots Fired”), Jasika Nicole (“Scandal”), Michael Trotter (“Rosewood”), Jesse Luken (“Justified”), Sadie Stratton (“Code Black”) and Aisha Hinds (“Star Trek Into Darkness”) in the pioneering role of Harriet Tubman.

Last we saw of the Macon 7, they had staged the greatest escape in history. It’s a journey which continues for the group of heroes, which in Season 2 is fraught with several challenges. Rosalee (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) spent most of Season 1 running away from the danger and in Season 2 she's running towards the danger. Noah (Aldis Hodge) faces execution and Cato (Alano Miller) has a lot of tough decisions to make.

“Cato goes into some darker, darker areas that -- if you thought Season 1 was dark, well, get ready,” says Miller. “We last left him off with money, and so you add money with the man you knew, and that's a whole 'nother beast.”

We get to see another side of Miss Ernestine, played by Amirah Vann who was sold off by her owner at the tail end of Season 1.

“Miss Ernestine is now in a new location with new struggles, new challenges. Everything she lived for has been taken away from her,” says Vann.

The 10-episode, hour-long series has a theme this year which is citizen versus soldier. Last season we saw the slaves escape 600 miles to freedom, and this season we follow them as they fight to maintain freedom.

"Underground” follows a group of slaves on a Georgia plantation who make the dangerous decision to journey 600 miles north for the promise of freedom in 1857. The show first aired last year on WGN and is the network's most-watched original scripted show ever.
